One of Maines Best Kept Secrets
Who We Are
A
valuable resource owned and operated by the people
of the State of Maine. The City of Eastport is
home to The Boat School of the Marine Technology
Center of Washington County Community College.
It lies on the shores of Cobscook Bay in Washington
County. The college has been training skilled
technicians for Maines marine industry since
1969. The two-year diploma Boatbuilding Technology
program was started at the Calais Armory.
An observation
by the Maine Boatbuilders and Repairers Association (now known as the Maine Marine
Trades Association) was that the best environment for the perpetuation of
traditional wooden boatbuilding skills should be the Washington County Vocational
Technical Institute (now Washington County Community College). Subsequently the
program moved to the old U.S. Coast Guard Lifesaving Station in Lubec. In 1978, the
Marine Trades Center was established in Eastportnow the Marine Technology Center.
It has evolved to meet the needs of the industry. We are industry supported by our
advisory committee and our accreditation is from the prestigious New England Association
of Schools and Colleges.
