Curriculum
Wood
Construction
This portion of the program will introduce students to boatbuilding using
wood as the primary construction material. There is a focus on traditional
construction methods combined with an introduction to marine drafting and
lofting. This portion of the course also provides students with an overview
of the tradition of boats and their historical construction. It is designed
to build a team approach and will provide a starting point to all aspects of
the integrated system called a boat.
Marine Systems
The marine systems portion of the program covers a variety of components in
contemporary vessel construction and maintenance. Subject areas are electrical
(AC/DC), refrigeration and air conditioning, steering and controls, marine plumbing,
standing and running rigging and associated components.
Composite and Fiberglass Construction
This specialty will build upon the skills mastered in Wood Construction and will
introduce the student to the fiberglass medium. Mold preparation and use, resin
types, fabric options, synthetic core materials and other construction media will
be discussed. Students will be exposed to both construction and repair techniques.
A major portion of instruction will focus on current and emerging technologies.
Projects will involve vacuum bag construction and infusion, coldmold and fiberglass
construction, drafting, and lofting. The purpose of this specialty is to prepare
students for success in positions in the boatbuilding/marine industry. These positions
include boat construction, maintenance, and repair. Students will be qualified to sit
for ACMA Certification.
